REMEMBERING AALIYAH…1979-2001
Aaliyah killed 9 years ago in an airplane crash in The Bahamas after filming the music video for her single “Rock the Boat”.
Where was I that day? I was at my brother’s house in upstate New York, up in the middle of the night because per usual I couldn’t sleep, watching MTV, when I saw the ticker below the screen. I was in disbelief and shock, and then proceeded to wake my son up to tell him the sad news. Just hours before, my son (who was 9 @ the time) was playing on repeat the “Romeo Must Die” CD in the car on our way upstate. It’s what he needed to hear, what I loved listening to, just to hear a few hours later Aaliyah was gone.

Flashback Friday| NOTORIOUS B.I.G In The ATL In 1994…HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG!!
Today we celebrate the late, great, legendary, Notorious B.I.G 38th birthday. I found a video of him in the ATL interviewing with V-103′s radio personality Ryan Cameron, who hosted a show called 411 Knowledge & Entertainment back in the day…check out the interview below…FOREVER MISSED!!

Lena Horne, the singer and actress who was the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio, died at the age of 92 on Sunday night at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. Cause of death has not been given at this time. Ms. Horne is survived by her daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley. Lena’s husband died in 1971; her son Teddy died of kidney failure the same year.
Lena quoted:
“I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept,” Horne once said. “I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked.“
My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.” “

The Controversy Surrounding Hip Hop Legend: Guru…May He R.I.P.
Legendary hip hop artist, Guru of Gangstarr, died Monday April 19 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 43 years old. Guru, born Keith Elam,was briefly comatose after suffering a massive heart attack in late February 2010.
According to AllHipHop.com:
Solar, Guru’s partner, expressed sadness over the loss.
“The world has lost one of the best MCs and Hip-Hop icons of all-time — my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru,” Solar said in a statement. “Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.

Remembering A Music Legend| TEDDY PENDERGRASS: “He Will Live On Through His Music”…
Teddy Pendergrass, a true music legend, of course we know suffered a car crash 28 years ago which left him paralyzed, he has died of colon cancer. He was 59 years old.
He died Wednesday in suburban Philadelphia, where he had been hospitalized for months.
The singer’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had “a difficult recovery.”“To all his fans who loved his music, thank you, “He will live on through his music.”
Pendergrass known for such classics as, “Close the Door,” “It Don’t Hurt Now,” “Love T.K.O.” “Turn Off The Lights”, & “My Greatest Inspiration”, and a host of other hits.
He was an international superstar and sex symbol [fellas note: he epitomize genuine sexy without having to do too much... something the newbies have yet to master].
Friend and longtime collaborator Kenny Gamble, of the renowned production duo Gamble & Huff, teamed with Pendergrass on his biggest hits and recalled how the singer was even working on a movie documenting his life, called “I Am Who I Am.”

TIME
Why is it that every TIME something great is happening in your life it seems like its accompanied by something tragic? I have lost two very important men in my life in one week. The 1st was my Uncle Ralph, the 2nd is A.J.
My Uncle Ralph was one of my favorite people in the whole wide world. He was the type that could make you laugh even when you were pissed off and make you smile as soon as he walked in the room. My Uncle was one of my biggest supporters & he would do anything for me or the rest of my family. Even though he didn’t have any money he was always trying to give me little gifts. Which I thought was cute because he was just trying to show how much he cared even though he knew I didn’t need it. Uncle Ralph was gay & always lived his life loud & proud. He partied like a rock star growing up & still enjoyed life as an older man. We first found out about his cancer at least two years ago. It went into remission for a while & eventually came back to claim his life slowly until TIME came for him to go to GOD.
When you loose someone to an illness like cancer it hurts bad, but at least you get a little TIME to prepare yourself for what’s coming. Some people make amends, some spend a little more TIME with the person in their last days, and others at least get a chance just to say “I love you”. Wait, there’s more…
“I am devastated by the loss of AJ. His death comes on the heels of the death of my beloved Uncle Ralph and with both of them gone, my heart is heavy with grief. I had spoken to AJ two hours before I got the call that he was in the hospital and never in a thousand years thought it was going to be the last time we spoke. He was taken way
too soon. There are so many things that I should have said to him, wanted to say to him. But now it’s too late.I want to deeply extend my heartfelt thanks to all of my family and friends – and that means my twitter and facebook friends as well — for the beautiful words of encouragement, prayers, and the sweet condolences. I make it through these difficult days because of you. I know this is cliché’ but I urge everyone to treat each day as if it’s your last and tell that special someone you love them today. Don’t wait. It may be too late.
Please pray for AJ’s children, his family and Riley—they too are grieving the loss of an incredible man, son, brother and father. I wish you all had gotten to know the AJ we all knew and loved,”
